Why Postdoc at Scripps?

The Scripps Research Institute is one of the world's largest, private, non-profit research organizations.  It stands at the forefront of basic biomedical science, a vital segment of medical research that seeks to comprehend the most fundamental processes of life. Over the last few decades, the institute has established a lengthy track record of major contributions to the betterment of health and the human condition.

A hallmark of TSRI is its interdisciplinary approach to scientific discovery, enabled by cross-cutting technologies. The institute's focus, broadly defined, is the quantitative molecular sciences and their connection to human health. TSRI is well positioned along the axis of translational science, the aim of which is to relate advances in the basic sciences to opportunities in drug discovery and disease-related research.

Mentorship

The more than 200 principal investigators at TSRI include many distinguished leaders in their fields, including two Nobel laureates and numerous members of the National Academy of Sciences (including its Institute of Medicine), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. 

Nationally Ranked Education Programs

In addition to training hundreds of postdoctoral fellows, TSRI offers a distinguished graduate program in the biological and chemical sciences as well as outreach programs for high school and middle school students, teachers, and undergraduates.

Launched in 1989, TSRI’s Graduate Program is ranked among the top graduate schools in the country according to a number of metrics, including U.S. News & World Report. The publication now ranks TSRI’s Graduate Program seventh overall in chemistry, with a ranking of sixth in the specialty of organic chemistry and second in the specialty of biochemistry. The school is also rated ninth overall in the biological sciences. The school can now boast more than 500 accomplished alumni, who work in both academics and industry. 

International Community

The Scripps Research Institute attracts scientists from all over the world, who join the effort to solve some of the greatest challenges in biomedical sciences.  About 70% of the postdocs doing research at TSRI are from countries outside the US, ensuring that the research conducted at TSRI has a powerful global reach. Our international students and scholars make up a very important part of our workforce, our academic programs, our research initiatives, and our vibrant and dynamic international community. 

TSRI's International Services Office administers the institute's visa programs and promotes this important international scientific and cultural exchange.

TSRI has been a leader in implementing high-caliber, specialized professional development services for PhD students and postdocs.  In addition to one-on-one career counseling appointments, we offer dozens of career workshops each year, including alumni networking events, career panels, academic job search workshops, industry training seminars, and scientific writing presentations. Resume writing seminars, on-camera practice interviews, social media tutorials, and networking workshops are offered regularly.
