Committee Meetings and Rubrics

The charts below illustrate advisory committee meeting information and rubric data for Scripps Research's Graduate Program.

The second and third charts below are interactive. If you are on a desktop, hover your pointer over different parts of the chart for detailed information. If you are viewing this on a mobile device, charts will resize for better viewing and interaction if you rotate your device to a landscape (horizontal) orientation. To filter chart data and update your view, use the drop-down selector at the top of each chart.

Committee Meeting Timeline

The diagram above outlines the timing of the various committee meetings. The standard flow is: advisory (year 2); candidacy (year 2/3); thesis update (year 3); original research proposal (year 4); thesis content approval (years 4-5, if necessary); and defense (year 5). Students who fall outside of this timeline meet with the Director of Graduate Studies, one of the Graduate Program Academic Advisors, or one of the Deans to ensure that the student is making reasonable research progress.

Distribution of Committee Meetings by Year

The diagram above illustrates when students are having the various committee meetings during the course of their graduate studies. It illustrates that most of students are able to follow the proposed timeline and stay on track to finish the program in a timely fashion.

Rubric Ratings by Meeting Type

The chart above presents the overall mean rating for writing, research and oral presentation rubrics by meeting type for all committee meetings for cohorts 1989-2020. The data show that as students move through the program, their research, communication, critical thinking and analytical skills increase. This is reassuring, as program administration would certainly anticipate that students who have reached the later stages of their graduate education are more proficient in the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) than first- or second-year students.
