Biomedical Laboratory Experience for Undergraduates

The Biomedical Laboratory Experience for Undergraduates (BLEU) is an immersive research course offered on both Scripps Research campuses (La Jolla, California and Jupiter, Florida) and is open to all local undergraduate students.

BLEU was designed to expose undergraduate students to graduate-level research and teach basic and advanced research techniques, experimental design, laboratory notebook skills, and data analysis in the chemistry and biology laboratories at Scripps Research. It integrates hands-on laboratory research experience with professional development and mentoring.

The heart of the course is the hands-on research experience in one of our state-of-the-art laboratories where interns learn how the scientific method is applied in cutting-edge basic and applied biomedical research. Students are active participants, working side-by-side with our world-renowned faculty and scientists. The selection of the student participants will be based on laboratory availability and a centralized application process.

The course will follow Scripps Research’s 10–14-week Graduate Program terms; students, however, will be able to continuously enroll. Students will be evaluated primarily by the faculty and in-lab mentors. In addition, students will be required to submit a research plan and an end-of-term report; an oral presentation (e.g., lab meeting or poster presentation) could be used instead.

Interested students must be enrolled full time at an accredited undergraduate institution and have reliable transportantion to and from the Scripps Research campus in Jupiter, Florida.

Course Prerequisites

Intro to Biology, Intro to Chemistry, and Pre-calculus. Genetics, Organic Chemistry, or Biochemistry are highly recommended.

Credits

Course credits are awarded based on the number of hours worked. Students are required to complete a minimum of 10 credit hours per week (= one credit).

By participating in the BLEU course at Scripps Research, it is expected that students will:

  1. Understand and practice basic laboratory safety and research techniques;
  2. Develop proper laboratory notebook maintenance skills;
  3. Work collaboratively with other researchers, demonstrating communication and problem-solving skills;
  4. Identify and use appropriate basic and advanced techniques and methodologies to address a research question or problem;
  5. Develop and enhance skills in analyzing, synthesizing and presenting original scientific research;
  6. Demonstrate effective oral and written scientific communication;
  7. Reflect constructively on research experience, identify strengths and opportunities for improvement, and prepare an individual development plan that maps education and career goals (e.g., IDP); and
  8. On a case by case basis, and if desired by the faculty mentor, the course coordinator will arrange one-on-one training sessions.

At the start of their first term, students will submit a Research Project Summary. At the beginning of each subsequent enrolled term, students will submit an updated research plan. At the end of each enrolled term, students will submit an end-of-term short report or reflection of their research experience gains. Faculty mentors will submit an evaluation form at the end of every term.

Course grades are determined as follows:

  • 75%: Laboratory Input (Faculty mentor’s evaluation)
  • 15%: Written Work (Research plan and reflection) or Oral Presentation (Lab meeting or poster)
  • 10%: Attendance
