Answers to frequently asked questions about the various summer undergraduate research programs at Scripps Research are below.
Where is the link to the online application?
Interested applicants can click on the Apply to SURF/REU button on the SURF and REU webpages on this site, which will open our Undergraduate Summer Internships Application system. The online application system accepts applications to our SURF and REU programs.
How many students apply?
In 2017, we received 509 applications to the SURF and REU programs, and accepted 22 students in California and 18 students in Florida.
How will I know if my transcript or letters of recommendation have arrived?
Transcripts and other collateral are uploaded to your application within two days of arrival. You can view your application status in the online system.
Can I send an unofficial transcript?
Yes. We will accept an unofficial transcript; however, it must be clear and legible.
Do letters of recommendation and/or transcripts need to be submitted through the online application system?
No, letters and transcripts can be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies, 10550 North Torrey Pines Road, TRY-10, La Jolla, CA, 92037.
How will I know when my application is complete?
You can check the online system for the status of your application. You will receive an email notification indicating that your application is complete.
When is the application deadline?
The application deadline for the SURF and REU undergraduate programs is Feb. 15 every year. The selection committee begins reviewing applications after the deadline. We do not have rolling admissions. The application deadline for the Scripps Research Translational Institute's Student Research Internship Program is posted on the Scripps Research Translational Institute website.
I am an international student. Can I apply to the SURF Program?
International students who are enrolled in and will receive a degree from a US college or university are eligible for the SURF or REU programs. International students studying abroad are not eligible for the program.
May I participate part-time or take summer classes?
No, all students are required to participate full-time in the programs.
