Our Mission

Part of The Scripps Research Institute's mission is to educate and train researchers preparing to meet the scientific challenges of the future. The mission of the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office is to prepare postdoctoral associates and graduate students for a range of professional endeavors, and to support their research training during their appointments. To fulfill this mission, we provide professional development programs and personal career advising to the Scripps training community.

Postdoctoral Training Outcomes:

The Office’s programs are driven by the National Postdoctoral Association’s Core Competencies for postdoctoral scholars.

By the conclusion of their postdoctoral appointment at TSRI, postdoctoral scholars are expected to:

  1. Have gained new and expanded discipline-specific knowledge and research skills through mentored training;
  2. Demonstrate evidence of research productivity, including publications, fellowships, and/or conference presentations;
  3. Possess the experience and insight necessary to make ethical choices pertaining to the responsible conduct of research;
  4. Have developed their communication, leadership, and professional skills through multidisciplinary research collaborations, career-related workshops and courses, and/or professional groups; and
  5. Articulate a plan for pursuing a career path of their choosing.

We strongly recommend that TSRI postdocs use an Individual Development Plan (IDP) to structure their training experience.  The IDP provides a planning framework that can help postdocs identify their professional development needs and career objectives.  With it, postdocs can set short-term project and skills-related milestones, develop longer-term career goals, and discuss these training objectives with their advisors.

Postdoctoral Training Policies:

In 2015, TSRI updated its policies related to postdoctoral training. The effort resulted in new and revised guidelines for both PIs and postdocs. Key elements include:

  • Postdocs are limited to six years of postdoctoral training at TSRI.
  • PIs are expected to pay postdocs at or above the NIH NRSA minimum stipend guideline.
  • Postdocs have access to a formal grievance procedure and reasonable, lab-specific vacation policies.
  • Postdocs and PIs are encouraged to conduct annual reviews and work together to create personalized Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

The complete policy language is available via the Human Resources Administrative Guidelines, section 10 (intranet only). These policies may change in the future as a result of continual efforts to promote the outstanding scientific training environment at TSRI.
