Velia Fowler, PhD

Associate Dean of Graduate Studies

Velia M. Fowler is a professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and she has been an active member of Scripps Research’s graduate program since its inception in 1989. Fowler received her bachelor's degree with High Honors in Biology from Oberlin College in 1974 and her doctorate in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University in 1980. After postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University Medical School (1980-84), she joined the faculty in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor (1984-87). Fowler moved to Scripps Research in 1987, and was promoted to associate professor in 1993 and to professor (with tenure) in 2000. In 2013, she became associate dean of graduate studies.

Fowler’s research involves the study of actin cytoskeletal regulation of cell and tissue architecture, development and physiology in mice and in human disease. Her laboratory uses biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, fluorescence and electron microscopy, mouse genetics, embryology and physiology approaches.
