| 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. | State of Scripps Research: A Vision for the Next Century of Pioneering Science and Medical Innovations at Scripps Research Address and Q&A with Pete Schultz, PhD President and CEO Pete Schultz will highlight the progress Scripps Research has made in pioneering a new model for non-profit biomedical research. He will describe how integrating basic science and translational research under one roof is accelerating next-generation medicines—from innovative medicines for infectious disease and metabolic disorders to regenerative treatments for heart, lung, and intestinal tissues. At a time of uncertainty in federal science funding, this model is not only advancing human health but also helping to generate sustainable support for innovative scientific research and for training the next generation of scientific leaders. Can’t make it in person? This session will be livestreamed. Register here to watch live or to receive the recording. |
| 11:00 – 11:20 a.m. | Coffee break |
| 11:20 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. | Science Talk | AI at the Institute: From Data to Discovery Presentation by Andrew Ward, PhD ’08 Professor and alumnus Andrew Ward will discuss how artificial intelligence is reshaping structural biology and why the quality of the underlying data will determine the impact that AI can have in biomedicine. He will describe how Scripps Research generates the scarce, high-quality experimental data that powerful models require, from cryo-electron microscopy structures of thousands of antibody-antigen complexes to millions of paired human antibody sequences, and how that data drives a pipeline that discovers antibodies, trains predictive models, and redesigns better vaccines. Following the talk, Andrew will be joined by an alumni roundtable discussion with Megan Blewett, PhD ’17 (Scion Life Sciences / Iris Medicine), Jill Roughan, PhD ’13 (Sciencia Consulting), and Andrew Su, PhD ’02 (Professor, Scripps Research) whose careers span biotech founding, life sciences investing, and AI-enabled commercialization, for a conversation on how AI is transforming drug discovery, the life sciences industry, and what comes next. |
| 12:20 – 2:00 p.m. | Lunch Optional tours and networking with student groups |
| 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. | Life & Legacy: An Estate Planning Primer (optional) Join a panel of estate planning professionals for a candid, jargon-free conversation about wills, trusts, healthcare directives, and protecting your family’s future. Whether you’re just starting to think about this or updating plans you made years ago, this session offers practical guidance in a relaxed, no-pressure setting. Light refreshments provided. Optional 1:1 conversations available afterward. RSVP to Liam Dunfey, wdunfey@scripps.edu. This session is educational and does not constitute legal or financial advice. Presented in partnership with Scripps Research’s Office of Gift Planning. |
| 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. | State of Skaggs Graduate School Address and Q&A with Keary Engle, PhD ’13 Hear from Dean Keary Engle, himself a Scripps Research alumnus, for an insider’s look at our training programs. Ranked #1 in Biological Sciences and #7 in Chemistry by U.S. News & World Report, the Skaggs Graduate School remains a central part of the scientific ecosystem at Scripps Research, and postdoctoral training is equally core to the institute’s identity. Join us to learn where our programs stand and where they’re headed next. A roundtable Q&A will follow with graduate student Grace Clarke (President’s Alliance member), postdoc Dr. Callum Nicoll (Vice President, Society of Fellows), and recent postdoc alumna Dr. Anne Ravn, PO ’26. Can’t make it in person? This session will be livestreamed. Register here to watch live or to receive the recording. |

Jeffery Kelly, PhD and Evan Powers, PhD ’00 trace the remarkable journey of tafamidis — from a question about protein misfolding in the Kelly lab at Scripps Research to an FDA-approved drug now available in pharmacies worldwide. Followed by an alumni roundtable with Mike Petrassi, PhD ’01 (Protego), Rob Garbaccio, PhD ’00 (Merck), and Jackie Blankman, PhD ’12 (Lundbeck). |

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is invited to this event?
Homecoming is open to all Scripps Research alumni — graduate students, postdocs, and former faculty from both our La Jolla and Florida campuses. If Scripps Research was part of your scientific journey, this event is for you.
I'm a Florida campus alum. Is this event for me too?
Absolutely — we welcome all Scripps alumni regardless of which Scripps campus you called home. Homecoming is a celebration of the full Scripps Research community, and you never know what connections you might make across generations and campuses.
I graduated decades ago and don't know anyone still at Scripps. Should I still come?
Yes! Homecoming is designed for alumni at every stage and generation. Many attendees will be reconnecting after years away, and our program is built to make those reunions natural and meaningful. Come as you are — the Scripps Research community will be glad you did.
Is there a cost to attend?
No, this is a complimentary event for alumni.
Registration & Program
When is the deadline to register?
Registration is now closed as of Thursday, October 29, 2026. If you have changes to your registration or questions about the status of your registration, reach out to alumninetwork@scripps.edu.
What is the cancellation policy?
If your plans change, please let us know so we can offer your spot to another guest.
Will sessions be recorded or available virtually for those who cannot attend in person?
We’re proud to have alumni all over the world, and we know not everyone can make the trip to La Jolla. That’s why we’re offering a live stream option for two key parts of the program (REGISTER HERE):
- 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. PT | State of Scripps Research Address by Pete Schultz, PhD
- 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. PT | State of Skaggs Graduate School Address by Keary Engle, PhD
There is also a virtual option to attend the Life & Legacy Estate Planning Panel Discussion from 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. PT. Email wdunfey@scripps.edu to register for this session.
Are there any other events going on that weekend?
While official Homecoming programming is Thursday and Friday, we hope you plan to stay for the weekend to enjoy all that San Diego has in store. Here are a couple of ancillary events on campus you may want to check out:
- Saturday, November 7 - Dale Boger Symposium (Register Here)
- Sunday, November 8 - Guitar Concert by visiting artist, Calum Graham (Register Here)
Guests & Family
Can I bring my family?
The main Homecoming programming on Friday, November 6 is designed for alumni only so that everyone can connect fully with the community. The exception is the opening reception on Thursday evening, November 5; you are welcome to bring a plus one to kick off the festivities and enjoy one of those iconic Torrey Pines sunsets from the Faculty Club deck.
Note: Individual labs may organize their own informal gatherings around Homecoming, and these may be open to families.
What is my family supposed to do while I'm at the event?
The options for entertainment are endless in beautiful La Jolla as well as the greater San Diego County area. Visit the sea lions in La Jolla Cove, explore Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve or simply take a stroll along the boardwalk and take in views of the Pacific.
For childcare needs, we recommend searching for local services closer to the event date.
Logistics
Where will the event be held?

Friday, November 6 — Full Day Program and Dinner: Scripps Research Auditorium and surrounding areas, 10620 John Jay Hopkins Dr, San Diego, CA 92121
