SURF/REU Admission Guidelines
All application materials for Scripps Research's SURF and REU programs must be received by February 15. The online application system will be deactivated at 11:59 pm PST on that date. Early submission is highly encouraged.
Students can choose to apply to either the SURF or REU program with the same application. Prior to the annual application deadline of February 15, click the Apply to SURF/REU button to visit our Undergraduate Summer Internships Application system, which accepts applications to both programs.
APPLICATION COMPONENTS
The following tasks must be completed in order for your application to be considered complete; incomplete applications will not be considered for admission.
- Submit an application online.
- Request transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.
- Address the following topics in short essays: What area of scientific research most interests you? Please include any Scripps Research faculty that is working in your area of interest. What benefits do you hope to gain from your research internship? Describe your extracurricular interests and hobbies.
- Obtain a minimum of two letters of recommendation from faculty who can assess your potential for research. Recommenders can submit letters of recommendation one of three ways: submit through the online application system, send via e-mail, or mail letters directly to the Office of Educational Outreach.
