Answers to frequently asked questions about the various summer undergraduate research programs at Scripps Research are below.
Where is the link to the online application?
From November 1 to February 1, interested applicants can click on the Apply to SURF button on the SURF page on this site.
How many students apply?
In 2025, we received 729 applications to the SURF program, and accepted 8 students. We expect to accept between 12 and 16 students this year.
How will I know if my transcript or letters of recommendation have been received?
Transcripts and other supporting documents must be uploaded to your application through the online application system. Their status of receipt will be updated within two business days of upload. You can view your application status in the online system.
Can I send an unofficial transcript?
Yes. Unofficial transcripts are fine; however, they must be clear and legible. Transcripts must be uploaded to your application via the online application portal. There is no need to mail or fax documents to us.
Do letters of recommendation and/or transcripts need to be submitted through the online application system?
Yes, all documents should be submitted via the online application system before the February 1 deadline. Your recommenders will also use this system to submit their letters of recommendation.
How will I know when my application is complete?
You can check the online system for the status of your application. You will receive an email notification indicating that your application is complete.
When is the application deadline?
The application deadline for the SURF program is Feb. 1 every year. The selection committee begins reviewing applications after the deadline. We do not have rolling admissions. The application deadline for the Scripps Research Translational Institute's Student Research Internship Program is posted on the Scripps Research Translational Institute website.
I am an international student. Can I apply to the SURF Program?
International students who are enrolled in and will receive a degree from a US college or university are eligible for the SURF program. International students studying abroad are not eligible for the program.
May I participate part-time or take summer classes?
No, all students are required to participate full-time in the programs.
Are the program dates flexible?
No, the program dates are not flexible and students are required to participate for the entirety of the program.
Is there a different application for the NSF REU Site?
No, there is not a separate application for the REU program. The Scripps Research SURF program is made possible by funding support from the National Science Foundation. (Award No. 2150537, REU Site: Scripps Structure and Function Summer Institute (SFSI))
