Sydney Morris, Ph.D.

Advisors: Floyd E. Romesberg, Ph.D. and Philip E. Dawson, Ph.D.

Doctoral Thesis: Biochemical Insights into Unnatural Nucleotides that Expand the Genetic Alphabet and Code of Living Cells
Undergraduate Institution: George Washington University
Noteworthy Publications: Synthetic Biology Parts for the Storage of Increased Genetic Information in Cells, ACS Synthetic Biology (2017)
Honors & Awards: National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Recipient (2015)
Favorite Aspects of Graduate Studies: "My favorite aspect of being a grad student at Scripps was doing my own experimental work - doing my experiments, collecting data, making sense of it and publishing. Apart from that, I enjoyed learning about science outside of my field of synthetic biology, and really understanding what the challenges are in other fields and what the frontier is and where we need to go next."
Next Steps: Morris is now a strategy consultant at a life sciences-focused firm. In this capacity she is helping early-stage biotech clients make intelligent drug discovery and development decisions to maximize the probability of clinical success.

Be sure to join us at 10 a.m. PDT on Friday, May 21 for our Virtual Commencement Ceremony! Morris' advisor and mentor, Prof. Phil Dawson, will deliver a few words (as will Morris) about her graduate experience, and viewers can learn about our 41 other 2021 graduates, who are now setting out to build careers that will impact the future of biomedical research.
